April is Stress Awareness Month

Stress is the body's natural response to challenges, triggering hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. While useful in short bursts, prolonged stress harms mental and physical health, and can lead to anxiety, depression, heart problems, and weakened immunity.1

It's important to recognize the signs of stress, which include irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, and physical discomfort.2 Stress Awareness Month serves as a reminder to reflect on our stress triggers and responses, and to equip ourselves with effective coping mechanisms.

Here are some stress management tips:

  • Prioritize adequate sleep and a healthy diet.
  • Avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or overeating.
  • Get regular exercise to release endorphins that uplift mood.
  • Relax with yoga, meditation, or a massage.
  • Whether through friends, family, or mental health professionals, reach out for support.
  • Organize your thoughts in a journal and to-do lists.
  • Take a vacation day to enjoy a hobby.
  • Walk outside in nature.

Learning to manage stress can help improve overall well-being and lead to a longer, happier, healthier life.
