Insurance Awareness Day

Edward Lloyd's Coffee House

In light of Insurance Awareness Day, we want to commemorate the humble beginnings of Lloyd's of London, the world's leading insurance marketplace, which started its journey in a small coffee shop.

Over 300 years ago, when the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the city, coffee shops emerged as places to transact business, each with its own specialty.

Lloyd's Coffee House quickly became a gathering place for maritime business and for those seeking news about ships, cargoes, and voyages.

Maritime insurance professionals would sell insurance to ship owners in the event their ships did not return from overseas. On the walls of the coffee house, these underwriters would write their names under the ships to indicate their commitment to assume a portion of the insured risk, coining the term “Underwriting”.

As the business expanded, Lloyd's transformed into a formal marketplace for insurance and reinsurance. Now recognized as Lloyd's of London, it stands as the world's leading insurance marketplace, renowned for its exceptional expertise, innovative approaches, and ability to underwrite complex risks.

Sutton Special Risk has been a Lloyd’s coverholder for 45 years. Lloyd’s and our other carrier partners share our appetite for risk and our willingness to customize plans to suit our clients’ needs.

Please get in touch with us to meet for a virtual or in-person coffee. As always, we’re happy to assist however we can.
